3D Design and 3D Printing for Robotics

Have you ever had an idea for a physical object that could solve a problem or make a task easier, but didn’t know how to bring it to life? In this course, we will teach you how to use 3D design and 3D printing to create custom parts and components for your robotics projects, turning your ideas into reality.

Starting from the basics, we will guide you through the process of designing objects using Autodesk Fusion 360, a powerful 3D design software. You will learn solid modeling techniques, how to design gears, and how to optimize your designs for 3D printing. As the course progresses, you will apply these skills to solve real-world robotics problems, creating increasingly complex models.

To participate in this course, each student must have access to a computer (Mac or Windows) with sufficient free disk space and administrative rights to install Autodesk Fusion 360. Chromebooks and other Linux OS computers are not compatible with the software used in this course. Additionally, students must have access to a 3D printer for the duration of the course to print their designed objects and robotics components.

Throughout the course, you will gain hands-on experience with 3D printers, learning about different materials and how the technology works. You will design and print several everyday objects, as well as robotics models of increasing complexity. By the end of the course, you will have an intuitive understanding of when and how to use 3D design and printing to solve problems in robotics.
